Give People Meaning

I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.”
-Joseph Campbell
Many fellow Americans feel unfulfilled and overwhelmed, struggling to find a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us to consume more, work harder, and be more successful.
Most of us are not searching for a specific purpose or ultimate meaning to our lives, but rather for the enjoyment and fulfillment that comes with simply being alive and experiencing life’s ups and downs.
Our society should help people find joy, love, adventure, and personal growth.
By giving people a reason to care about the world around them, we can create a more compassionate and just society.

The Negative Consequences of Lives Without Meaning

People are social creatures. We need to feel like we belong and that our lives have meaning. When individuals lack a sense of purpose or meaning in their lives, it can lead to a variety of negative consequences. From mental health issues to social problems, including gun violence, the impact of this lack of direction can be far-reaching and long-lasting.
One of the most immediate consequences of a lack of meaning or purpose is a decline in mental health. When individuals feel like they lack a reason for being or a sense of direction, they often experience feelings of hopelessness, depression, or anxiety. These feelings can become overwhelming and can even lead to self-destructive behaviors like substance abuse, self-harm, or violence.
When people lack a sense of purpose, they often struggle to find the motivation to engage in positive behaviors or pursue meaningful goals. Without a clear sense of direction or purpose, individuals may feel aimless, unfocused, or unmotivated. This can lead to a sense of stagnation, boredom, or frustration. So much of the polarization we’re facing is due to the anger rampant in society.

Individuals who lack a sense of purpose may be more susceptible to engaging in negative behaviors or contributing to social problems. For example, they may be more likely to engage in criminal activity or substance abuse or become apathetic or disengaged from their communities. This creates a lack of social cohesion and contributes to social isolation.

When people don’t have a sense of purpose it leads to several negative consequences.
  • Increased risk of depression and anxiety. People who don’t have a sense of purpose are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. This is because they don’t have anything to look forward to or to strive for. They may feel like their lives are meaningless and that there’s no point in going on.
  • Increased risk of addiction. People who don’t have a sense of purpose are more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol to numb their pain. They may also be more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as gambling or unprotected sex.
  • Increased risk of suicide. People who don’t have a sense of purpose are more likely to contemplate or attempt suicide. This is because they feel like they have nothing to live for and that their lives are not worth living.
  • Increased risk of violence and crime. People who don’t have a sense of purpose are more likely to commit crimes. This is because they may feel like they can’t get ahead in life through legitimate means. They may also feel like they need to take what they want, regardless of the consequences.
  • Increased risk of social isolation. People who don’t have a sense of purpose are more likely to withdraw from social activities. They may feel like they don’t belong or that they have nothing to contribute. This can lead to loneliness and isolation.

It’s worth noting that a lack of purpose or meaning is not just a personal issue; it is also a societal issue. When large numbers of individuals lack a sense of direction or purpose, it can lead to negative outcomes for entire communities. For example, it can contribute to higher rates of crime, drug use, and social inequality.

Gun Violence and Extremism

One of the primary reasons why individuals may act out violently is because they feel powerless or disenfranchised. Without a clear sense of direction or purpose, they may feel like they have no control over their lives or their future. This sense of powerlessness can become overwhelming and can lead to feelings of anger or frustration.

Individuals may act out violently as a way to get attention or recognition. When individuals feel like they are not being seen or heard, they may resort to violent or aggressive behavior as a way to get noticed. This can be particularly true for individuals who feel marginalized or oppressed.

It’s also worth noting that individuals who lack a sense of purpose may be more susceptible to extremist ideologies or groups. These groups may offer a sense of purpose or meaning that the individual feels is lacking in their own life. Unfortunately, this can lead to violent or harmful actions that are justified by the belief system of the group.

There is more to life than just material possessions and achievements. What if our true purpose is to give meaning to others?

Meaning is Good

By emphasizing the importance of finding purpose and meaning in life, we can help individuals lead happier, more fulfilling lives while also making a positive impact on society as a whole.
When individuals feel like they have a sense of purpose or meaning in their lives, they are more likely to engage in positive behaviors and contribute to their communities. This forms stronger social bonds, increases civic engagement, and a greater sense of fulfillment for individuals.
Giving people meaning can help combat the rising rates of mental health issues in our society. When individuals feel that their lives have purpose and meaning, they are less likely to experience feelings of hopelessness and despair. Instead, they are more likely to feel a sense of fulfillment and joy, which can lead to improved mental health and overall well-being.
They are more likely to be motivated to make positive changes in their communities. This, in turn, can lead to improved social and economic outcomes for everyone.
Giving people meaning can also have a positive impact on the environment. When individuals feel that they are part of something larger than themselves, they are more likely to make choices that benefit the planet. For example, they may be more likely to recycle, conserve energy, or reduce their carbon footprint.
In addition to the personal benefits, giving people meaning can also make the world a better place. When we help others, we are creating a more compassionate and just society. We are also making the world a more beautiful place by spreading love and kindness.

How To Create More Meaning

So, how can we make giving people meaning more of a priority?
Giving people meaning is not about doing something big or grandiose. It can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand. When we give to others, we not only make them feel better, but we also make ourselves feel better. Studies have shown that people who give to others are happier, healthier, and more resilient.
One approach is to encourage individuals to explore their passions and find ways to use them to make a positive impact on the world. Whether it’s through volunteering, activism, or simply being kind to others, there are countless ways for individuals to contribute to society in meaningful ways.
Another approach is to emphasize the importance of community and connection. By fostering strong relationships and a sense of belonging, we can help individuals feel that they are part of something larger than themselves. This can give them a sense of purpose and meaning, even amid life’s challenges.
We need to make it easier for everyone to experience life fully.
Be available for new experiences. People need time and money to do new things. For many individuals and families, working 9-5, taking care of kids, then doing housework on weekends gets old, fast. People should have more time to do new things.
Spending time with loved ones. We’ve got to help people make time for the people who matter most to them. Again it comes down to time and money.
Doing things like improving infrastructure, encouraging companies to provide more time off, or even things like a four-day workweek or Universal Basic Income can help people live more fulfilling lives.
Give back to others. Help people find ways to make a difference in the world. There are many ways to get involved in the community, from volunteering at a local soup kitchen to mentoring a child. Encouraging all kinds of ways of being involved in the community, including volunteering, can help individuals and the community at large be better.
We should encourage more people to pursue their passions and interests, no matter how big or small they may seem.
Giving people meaning is one of the most important things we can do in life. It is not only good for us, but it is also good for the world. So let’s make it a priority.

We All Need A Reason For Living

People are not necessarily looking for a grand, overarching meaning to life. Instead, they are looking for ways to experience life fully and to live it to the fullest.
This means different things to different people. For some, it might mean traveling the world and experiencing different cultures. For others, it might mean pursuing their passions and making a difference in the world. And for still others, it might mean simply spending time with loved ones, taking care of the yard, and enjoying the simple things in life.
No matter how individuals find meaning, the important thing is to make it easier for people and groups to find ways to experience life fully. This is how we give people meaning.
Ultimately, giving people meaning should be a top priority for our society. By helping individuals find purpose and meaning we can create happier, healthier, and more engaged communities for all.
Life is a precious gift. We’ve got to help people experience it fully.
