Poll Shows Majority of Citizens Would Prefer Politicians to Stop Acting Like Greedy, Self-Serving Weasels
Accountability is a critical component of a functioning government. Without it, politicians can act with impunity, making decisions that benefit themselves or their financial supporters rather than serving the best interests of the people they were elected to represent.
When politicians are confident that they will be re-elected no matter what they do, there is little incentive for them to act responsibly or to be accountable for their actions.
When politicians are beholden to corporate cash like our leaders today are, they prioritize the interests of corporations over those of the general public.
The only laws that get passed are those that make someone money.
Corporations have enormous resources at their disposal, which they can use to influence politicians to further their own agendas. This can lead to policies that benefit corporations at the expense of the public, such as tax breaks, deregulation, and other forms of corporate welfare.
Our Unaccountable Government Causes All Kinds of Problems
A government like ours that isn’t accountable to voters causes so many problems for all of us. Accountability is a critical aspect of democratic governance that ensures that elected officials are responsible for their actions and decisions.
When a government is not accountable to voters, corruption and abuse of power aren’t far behind. Our elected officials act in their interests and do not care about the best interests of their constituents or the country. Oftentimes they are actively acting against the public interest. We only get policies that benefit a select few.
Some of the many problems our unaccountable leaders are causing:

Crime and Violence
Division Like Crazy!
Gerrymandering: Making a Mockery of Democracy since 1812
Incompetent Leaders
Inequality
So Much Anger
The Federal Debt: Our Trillion-Dollar Problem
The Health Care Crisis
The High Cost of Living
A lack of accountability in government results in policies that are poorly designed and implemented. Without the fear of losing their positions, elected officials could care less about creating effective policies that meet the needs of the people they serve.
Our government is less transparent and less responsive to the needs and desires of its citizens. This has resulted in a total lack of trust in government institutions and decreased participation in the democratic process. We all feel powerless to affect change. Apathy and disengagement from civic life are the results.
The American government today has zero respect for our human rights and civil liberties.
There are Many Reasons Our Government is Not Accountable to Us
The lack of accountability in our leadership can be attributed to many causes, including weak democratic institutions, corruption, limited access to information, lack of civic engagement, authoritarianism, political polarization, and a lack of political will.
There are many reasons our elected officials do not care about us:

An Inept, Lazy and Compromised Media
Lobbying – Just Super Lame
Our Broken Election System

The Leadership Vacuum: Our Politicians are Worthless and the Media Lies
Accountable Officials Can Help Us Reach Our Most Important Goals
If American leaders were truly accountable to the people they serve, the country would undoubtedly be in a much better place. When leaders are accountable, they are more likely to prioritize the needs and interests of their constituents, rather than their self-interest. This would lead to better policy decisions that benefit the majority of Americans, not just a select few.
Accountability can help to prevent corruption and abuse of power, ensuring that leaders act with integrity and transparency. Citizens would feel more engaged and empowered in the democratic process, leading to greater trust in government institutions. Ultimately, a more accountable government would lead to a stronger, more stable, and more prosperous America.

Strategies to Increase Government Accountability
If we want a functioning government, we need to hold politicians accountable for their actions (or lack thereof). We need them to be subject to oversight and scrutiny from the media, the public, and other branches of government. It means that they must be held to high ethical standards and punished if they engage in unethical behavior or violate the law.
We need to reduce the influence of corporate money in politics, there must be strict regulations on political donations and lobbying.
We need to ensure that politicians are working for the people they represent, rather than serving the interests of their wealthy donors.

Our unaccountable government is destroying what should be a wonderful country. From corruption and abuse of power to poorly designed policies, decreased transparency, and limited respect for human rights and civil liberties, the future is not looking great.
To maintain a functional and democratic government, politicians must be held to high ethical standards, subject to oversight and scrutiny, and not beholden to corporate cash. Strong accountability mechanisms are essential for ensuring that elected officials act in the best interests of the public and that citizens have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives.
